Gudi padwa marks the beginning of Hindu calender and celebrated as new year.It also marks the beginning of 'vasant',or spring season.The word 'Padwa' is a sanskrit word means the crop.It also signifies the end of one harvest and the beginning of the new harvesting.The first day of month of chaitra marks the beginning of hindu calender called panchaang that tells about the various festivals celebrated in India through out the day.It is believed that lord brahma began the creation of the universe on this day. The hindus of Kasmir start their New Year Navreh, the southern Indian states of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh begin their new year - Ugadi. The Marathas celebrate their new year Gudi Padwa, and the Sindhis observe Cheti Chand. Gudi padwa is considered as auspicious day for making investments on buying house ,jewellery and any of the other new things.

'O Lord Brahma,Lord Vishnu ! Please enable me to absorb the Principle of Creation and the Fire Principle present in the atmosphere. Let the Divine consciousness present in these principles be preserved constantly.Let the energy thus received, be used for my spiritual practice.'

 CELEBRATING GUDI PADWA


Hoisting Gudi: Gudi is a brahma dhvaj means flag that signifies the win over evil.Flag is mostly made of jari cloth, bright yellow or green in colour tied on the top of bamboo stick with sweets,mango and neem leaves,garland of flower.Over all these things a copper or silver pot is placed in inverted position which means winning flag-"the Gudi".

Celebration at door: After making Gudi ,people decorate their doorstep by making Rangoli and they also decorate by making garlands and putting them at doors and windows.

Taking an oil bath:People get up early in the morning and take bath with oil which signifies ‘Abhyang asnan’. It is said that with normal bath raja and tama compoment decreases and sattva component increases for 3 hours, Yet if you bath with oil it stays long for about 5 hours which is very blessing. 

Puja: After taking bath ,people start pooja. On this day they pray to Lord Brahma by doing hawan.Required offering are put in the fire that says to reach lord and he blesses the home with all evil spirit, cleanses all sins and blesses home with blessings and prosperity.Then people start chanting various 'mantras'.At last they distribute Gudi Padwa prasad.Then people put tika to their all harvesting instruments that they use use during harvesting because it is considered very spiritual for people soing farming activities.
